Why You Left Your Last Job:   During the last downturn, in 2001, the company I was with cut nearly 50% of its staff between May and Sept of that year. I was the highest paid person in the Research Dept, so I was not surprised when I got my walking papers.

How You Started Your Business:  I contacted clients, colleagues, and friends, telling them I was available for freelance work. I began networking like crazy. At one meeting I met a guy who worked for an ad agency who said he was into branding. I called him to schedule a meeting and left a message; he called back and asked me if I did Customer Satisfaction studies and I said yes. He then asked if I'd come to a client meeting with him, and of course I said yes again. Two weeks later, we had a signed contract, and my company was launched. I haven't looked back.

What Does Success Mean To You: Success means doing the work I want to do with clients I want to work with. It means the freedom to make my own hours and not have to put up with incompetent managers who make decisions based more on ego than on good business practices. I don't define success by a dollar figure, although one could easily define failure by one. I'm not making a fortune, but I am making enough to allow me to travel, see a show when I want to, and basically have the kind of lifestyle I want.
