I reinvented myself after a wave of layoffs hit Time Inc. in 2005.

I produced tv's "This Old House" for 17 years, starting in 1988 when the show was still at its public television birthplace, WGBH Boston. AOL Time-Warner bought the "brand" in 2000; its corporate financial troubles lead to layoffs a few years later. As the top person at the show, my paycheck proved deadly to me.

Instead of continuing in television, I surprised many people, including myself, by starting my own consulting business in 2006, using what I'd learned in those 17 years to help people get through their own home renovations. I provide straight advice, build and manage the correct design and building team, and make sure homeowners are getting the best possible experience. As a business, it's at the forefront of a new field, it's been a success, and i really really enjoy it.
