Why You Left Your Last Job:   I was laid off from a health insurer. I didn't see it coming, so I immediately needed to pick myself up and identify my next steps in my career.  I looked at other corporate positions but decided that I would also explore new avenues such as non-profit work or small business ownership.

How You Started Your Business:   I sought out help in identifying the options available to me in purchasing a franchise or business for sale.  I didn't feel like I was in a position to start from scratch and both the franchise model and a going concern would allow me to get off the ground more quickly.  My "coach" (from a firm called The Entrepreneur's Source) helped to identify what types of business I might be best suited to own, based on my personality, expertise and desired type of work.  He brought me a number of options to analyze, all of which were franchises, and I investigated each of them based on their cash flow potential, what a typical day might be for me, and how it my fit my long-term objectives.  I ended up purchasing the Commission Express franchise in Western Washington because it was a going concern (although not anywhere near fully optimized), appeared to have a well established business model, and would leverage my financial skills.  Commission Express provides cash flow solutions for real estate professionals by buying their commission receivables on pending real estate transactions.  It's a win-win situation for these independent contractors who have limited capital access and still need to weather the ups and downs of the real estate cycle.  I'm happy to be providing a useful service to other business people that meets their needs at a reasonable cost.

What Does Success Mean To You:  I have three objectives for my business:
1)  Generate adequate cash flow for my lifestyle and retirement objectives
2)  Provide flexibility and balance in my professional and personal life
3)  Continue to grow the business, as my client relationships grow, so that it continues to be challenging and interesting to me.
