Guiding Graphics

Yes, I lost my job like so many others. I have been an art director, graphics manager and graphic designer for 15 years. Now, you might think being a freelance graphic designer isn’t so bad since outsourcing has become more of a necessity for firms lately, but I work in a small niche. I am a graphic designer for the creative architects, engineers, landscape architects, urban planners, contractors and developers.
A lot of the A/E/C designers think they can design their presentations or books themselves. They are extremely talented when it comes to visualizing the 3D outcome but that doesn’t translate to 2D most of the time. I decided to start my own firm named Guiding Graphics with an objective of helping A/E/C firms produce high-end quality presentations that represents their firm at the highest levels. So far, I have been quite successful at helping smaller firms that needed the extra support.
Located in NYC, I wanted to network with architects, engineers and construction companies but could not find any groups or organizations that combined the industries. There is AIA, ULI and ASLA but they are all separated from each other and not available to one another for resources and/or referrals. I decided to create my own networking group named A/E/C Professionals Circle. With this group, I wanted to stay in contact with all of those fabulous people I have worked with whom have been laid off, as well as be able to refer them to firms in need. This group has grown to over 120 in the last few months with a mailing list of 300. I organize a free networking night once a month in hopes of meeting individuals that could use my help as well as make those valuable connections we all need at this crazy time.
While this networking group has kept me busy, I crave the late night work of producing something beautiful that a firm can benefit from. I struggle with advertising my company and the business construction of it. There are so many things I don’t know and I am continuously learning. While I love being my own boss, the future uncertainty keeps me looking at the job postings. With hesitancy, I apply for some but in my hopes of all hopes, I want to be successful and comfortable with my company, my baby, my uncertain future. It will just take time and perseverance.
