Start-Up Success Stories
Home HelpersGary Allen and Denise McDonald, residents of Greensobo, NC, found themselves laid off at work due to downsizing and faced with the tough decision of “What’s next?” Gary and Denise had worked at the same company for over 12 years. Due to the recession, the company downsized and both were left unemployed. Inspired by his wife’s battle with cancer and the ongoing commitment to keep his 97 year-old mother in her home, Gary knew he desired to be involved in helping other families in the same situation as his. He decided that something in the in-home senior care industry was his true calling and he would open a business to provide such services. Denise is an Oak Ridge native and knew she wanted a job which would allow her to give back to the community and allow her to serve others. She too decided that the in-home senior care industry was right up her alley but was unable to find a job. By chance, Gary called Denise one say to see how her career search was coming along, found out that she wanted to go into the same field as him but had yet to locate a job, and the rest is history. Gary and Denise opened their Home Helpers business earlier this month. Home Helpers offers free in-home consultations and works with clients individually to tailor flexible care plans to meet their specific needs and budgets. Services offered include companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, local transportation, dressing assistance, personal grooming/bathing and medication reminders.
