I got laid-off from a high-paying tech job in November 2007. While laid-off and looking for work, I came across the no longer running show "The Big Idea" (with Donny Deutsch) and it inspired me to do something I had been thinking about for many years.
I first had the idea to combine the fit and the feel of the ribbed tank top (aka "wife-beater") with the protection of a regular undershirt about 6 years ago. Over the years, I was in search for a company who offered it, but could never find one. Once I saw Donny's show, I decided it was time to make it myself -- that's when RibbedTee was born.
Even though I didn't have any regular source of income, never designed a piece of clothing before, and had no contacts in the garment industry, I decided to start the company and paid for everything with a credit card. We launched in late April of 2008 and got our first order online the same day. After about 6 months, the business was paying for itself.
Now, a little over a year later, we have established RibbedTee as a leader in our category known for a quality product and great customer service. Although I was unsure of what the future had in store for me after my unexpected lay-off, I can honestly say that it was one of the greatest things that could have ever happened.
