Why You Left Your Last Job: After tech boom turned into tech bust in 2002, I weathered a 65% reduction in force before outsourcing my job to India (and consequently being fired and having the company reneg on sponsoring me into Kellogg's Executive Masters Program).
How You Started Your Business: I took an inventory of what I wanted in my next career. 1. I wanted to get paid even if I didn't work. 2. I wanted a business that if my children wanted to join it, they could. If not, then it had a book value and I could sell it. 3. I wanted something that would fit with my values and mission in life.
At the time I was converting my COBRA health insurance into individual health insurance and saving over $500/month. I peppered the insurance agent with questions, then started my own business with the help of some other insurance agents.
What Does Success Mean To You: Doing an extrodinary job serving my customers and prospects. Having my business fit my mission in this world. Being able to schedule my business around my family. Knowing that no one can come up behind me, tap me on the shoulder and say "we love you, but you don't fit into our balance sheet."
