Why You Left Your Last Job:   I worked for the same corporation, in various jobs, for 23 years after college.  My last 6 years there were spent very happily in a job that was a perfect match for my skills.  When that entire department was eliminated, I was moved to another job in its parent department.  Six weeks later, we were notified that THAT entire department's work was all being outsourced to a vendor!  Reeling from two downsizings in three months, I didn't want to play there any more, and took an early retirement package they were just rolling out.

How You Started Your Business:  After shopping around in the job market and finding only entry-level jobs that paid about half what I was making, I started to examine what I had done in my corporate career that had made me happy and brought me acclaim.  What I found was startling!  In every job I had held, I would change the nature of the job if I had to in order to incorporate writing into it.  Writing had been the outlet for my natural creativity that had been stifled in the corporate world.  Moreover, my skill in writing had led to promotions, awards, and innovations that would not otherwise have been possible.  So I set out on the road to starting my own writing business, adding editing as an additional source of revenue.  It's been a long road and I'm still learning every day after 6 years, but I wouldn't go back for anything.

What Does Success Mean To You:    What success ultimately means to me is freedom.  Freedom from worrying about being downsized, freedom to control my own destiny, freedom to pursue things that matter to me and make a difference to others.  One of the reasons I started my own business was to give me the time flexibility to care for my mother, who's now 92.  I've now begun writing a series of e-books to teach others how to do what I've done.  Called "A Professional Writer's Ladder to Success", the 40-book series covers every aspect of starting and running a successful writing business.  I've released 8 so far, then pushed the project to a back burner in favor of other paying work, but plan to resume work on them soon.  You'll find information about them on my website
